It was at its best when we had multiworld plugin. It had its own world called the Void that was empty like the End but had a day and night cycle like Oveworld. This was very elegant in an understated way. The edges had invisible blocks that stopped you from falling over the edge.
I think complaints about not having "a real spawn" lead to the spawn building in third world.
